Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has been struggling with many a blow in the past. In her book “Lessons” she describes the “worst decision” of her life.
Top model Gisele Bündchen (38) first made public her moving story in October last year. Since March 1, her autobiography “Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life” is now also available in German. What is it about? To teasing in childhood, all sorts of hardships that a successful model must apparently take on itself and a beauty intervention, which the native-born Brazilian meanwhile referred to as “one of the worst decisions” of her life.
Being big is not easy
In the mid-1990s she became the star of the fashion world: Gisele Bündchen ran a fashion show after the next, had herself scanned for magazine covers and flew around the world for her job. That she would once become a coveted top model, she probably would not have believed even as a young girl.
As she writes in her book, as a teenager she was several inches taller than many boys. At the time, however, that was only ridicule and mockery. Again and again they would have raised their classmates nicknamed Olly, based on the lanky Popeye character Olivia Oyl. “I felt humiliated, recalls the now 38old back to her school days.
The dark side of success
Modeling also has its downsides. The Brazilian also had to realize that. Not only the many traveling around made her to create, even the “endless photo shoots” in which she took her “body deformed”, “an unnatural pose after another” and “hardly breathed”, are still in the bone. She has back pain, scoliosis and knee problems. “If you do not take care of your body at a young age, I guarantee that you will eventually pay the price,” says Bundchen, drawing the lesson from her turbulent working life today.
The topmodel existence had for the 38-year-old, but not only physical consequences. Mentally, it was not always good for her either. In her book, Bündchen talks openly and unadorned about panic attacks. “Everything had become a cage, and I was the animal that was trapped in it and gasped for air,” she writes. “Your world is getting smaller and smaller and you can not breathe, that’s the worst feeling I’ve ever had.”
The depression got worse over time. To the point where she wondered if that feeling might end, “if I just jump off my balcony.” The model finally sought medical help and found ways to find herself using yoga and meditation.
Everything for the beauty?
Is Gisele Bündchen happy today? With American football player Tom Brady (41), the supermodel has married the star quarterback of the NFL and has two children in common with him: daughter Vivian (6) and son Benjamin (9). In the course of this, the Brazilian also speaks of a decision that she regrets until today.
Of course, that does not mean the decision to become a mother. Cuffs, on the other hand, suffer from a beauty surgery that she had done after breastfeeding. Since her children wanted “the left breast more than the right one” her bust size was “a bit crooked” and also “much smaller”. In 2015, she put under the knife. With the sad result that Bündchen did not recognize her “own body” after the operation.
She learned from her mistake. She wanted to do something for herself and her looks, but now she has to admit that she has mainly pursued the goal of pleasing others. “The lesson is to first listen to yourself before making important decisions, because it is you who is living with the results.”
